1886 “No Good” Cry Old Stuff
A pastor entered a tavern where a man, wishing to embarrass him, rose and suddenly called out quite loudly, “Es gibt keinen Gott” (“There is no God”). The pastor went to him, calmly laid his hand on his shoulder, and said, “Friend, what you have said is not at all new. The Bible said that more than 2,000 years ago.” The man replied, “I never knew that the Bible made such a statement.” The pastor informed him, “Psalm 14, verse 1, tells us, “The fool says in his heart, there is no God.” But there is a great difference between that fool and you. He was quite modest and said it only in his heart; he didn’t go about yelling it out in taverns.”
Proposition - As embark on studying the attribute of God’s infinitude this morning we will look what two aspects: 1) what does infinitude mean, and 2) how is infinitude revealed by the Names of God.
Interrogative question - In what ways is your living raveling the infinitude of our God?
5 Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.
The infinite nature of God simply means that God exists outside of and is not limited by time or space. Infinite simply means “without limits.” When we refer to God as "infinite," we generally refer to Him with terms like omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence.
The names of God reflect the great and varied aspects of God’s character. They are particularly used by the psalmists to speak of God as a source of strength, security, blessing and hope.

2. Titles that depict God as Lord -
17 “For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.
10 “So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of you.
3 “Keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn,
10 The Lord will reign forever, Your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord!
9 “Why are You like a man dismayed, Like a mighty man who cannot save? Yet You are in our midst, O Lord, And we are called by Your name; Do not forsake us!”
14 “Therefore the Lord has kept the calamity in store and brought it on us; for the Lord our God is righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we have not obeyed His voice.
The Lord God -
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
5 And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.
The Lord God Almighty -
4 O Lord God of hosts, How long will You be angry with the prayer of Your people?
8 O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
14 Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, “Because you have spoken this word, Behold, I am making My words in your mouth fire And this people wood, and it will consume them.
16 Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.
5 Even the Lord, the God of hosts, The Lord is His name.
13 For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind And declares to man what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness And treads on the high places of the earth, The Lord God of hosts is His name.
The Lord Most High -
17 I will give thanks to the Lord according to His righteousness And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
2 For the Lord Most High is to be feared, A great King over all the earth.
9 For You are the Lord Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.
The Sovereign Lord -
26 “I prayed to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord God, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
7 Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why did You ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan!
28 “Now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant.
8 He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken.
17 ‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You,
2 And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, “Lord God, please pardon! How can Jacob stand, For he is small?”
3. Titles that depict God as the source of love -
3. Titles that depict God as the source of love -
10 My God in His lovingkindness will meet me; God will let me look triumphantly upon my foes.
17 O my strength, I will sing praises to You; For God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.
2 My lovingkindness and my fortress, My stronghold and my deliverer, My shield and He in whom I take refuge, Who subdues my people under me.
11 Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
God as shepherd -
15 He blessed Joseph, and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
24 But his bow remained firm, And his arms were agile, From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
1 Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
The true God -
3 “For many days Israel was without the true God and without a teaching priest and without law.
10 But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, And the nations cannot endure His indignation.
3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
17 And the light of Israel will become a fire and his Holy One a flame, And it will burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.
8 Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall I will rise; Though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.
17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

9 The Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble;
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
3 For You have been a refuge for me, A tower of strength against the enemy.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!”
9 For you have made the Lord, my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I wait for Your word.
5 I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.
19 O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, And my refuge in the day of distress, To You the nations will come From the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited nothing but falsehood, Futility and things of no profit.”
16 The Lord roars from Zion And utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the heavens and the earth tremble. But the Lord is a refuge for His people And a stronghold to the sons of Israel.
7 The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.
A hiding-place -
7 You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.
A fortress -
2 He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;

2 My lovingkindness and my fortress, My stronghold and my deliverer, My shield and He in whom I take refuge, Who subdues my people under me.
10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation And have not remembered the rock of your refuge. Therefore you plant delightful plants And set them with vine slips of a strange god.
19 O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, And my refuge in the day of distress, To You the nations will come From the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited nothing but falsehood, Futility and things of no profit.”
A stronghold -

9 The Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble;
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in time of trouble.
2 For You are the God of my strength; why have You rejected me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
2 My lovingkindness and my fortress, My stronghold and my deliverer, My shield and He in whom I take refuge, Who subdues my people under me.
16 The Lord roars from Zion And utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the heavens and the earth tremble. But the Lord is a refuge for His people And a stronghold to the sons of Israel.
A defender -
18 “He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.

26 My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
57 The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.
5 I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.

7 “All who came upon them have devoured them; And their adversaries have said, ‘We are not guilty, Inasmuch as they have sinned against the Lord who is the habitation of righteousness, Even the Lord, the hope of their fathers.’

15 But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
2 He prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity.
10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

The Attributes of God, Volume 1: A Journey into the Father’s Heart (The Journey to Infinity)
I wouldn’t quote anybody unless there were Scripture to confirm it, and Scripture does indeed confirm that the Trinity will fill our hearts. “No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit” (1 John 4:12–13).
